ADULT: Wingspan 65-80mm.  A generally grey moth with drab forewings that have 3 to 4 black bars on the upper surface. The wings are chequered along the trailing edge with the hindwings an overall plain dark brown colour. The abdomen is barred black. CHRYSALIS: Pupates under leaf litter or just below ground. LARVA: Green with a thick brown stripe running along its back. The whole body is covered in several rows of creamy dashes with a row of black edged orange spots running along each flank. The horn at the rear is black. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light and nectar at night. HABITAT: Coniferous woodland. FLIGHT PERIOD: May to August. STATUS: Resident.  Local and more likely to be found towards the South.
